Introduction

Have you ever had to overcome a challenging situation in your life and wondered how you would do it? Perhaps you’ve had to deal with a serious health condition, the death of a loved one, or an unexpected change in your situation. Resilience—the capacity to adjust and bounce back from setbacks—becomes crucial in these circumstances.

I have experienced my fair share of personal adversity, including armed robbery, a near-death encounter, and even homelessness, so I am well aware of the value of resilience. It might mean the difference between giving up and battling through the most trying circumstances. But what happens when we rely too heavily on our resilience?

In this article, we’ll talk about the concept of “resilience” and how it can help us get through difficult times. We’ll also look at the problem of using resilience too much and how that can lead to burnout, stress, and other negative outcomes. We’ll even discuss resilience fatigue, a lesser-known ailment that affects BIPOC and other marginalized groups. In order to avoid overusing resilience and promote general well-being, we’ll also provide helpful tips for finding a balance, setting boundaries, and engaging in self-care. To discover more, keep reading.

Developing Resilience as a Skill and Understanding Resilience Fatigue

Many people are unaware of the fact that resilience is a skill that can be developed over time, rather than something we are born with. Being able to adapt to adversity and effectively deal with challenges are prerequisites for developing resilience. It entails creating a collection of coping skills that can be used in stressful or emergency situations.

It’s crucial to concentrate on your own personal assets and create a solid support system if you want to develop resilience. You can also practice positive self-talk, hone your problem-solving abilities, and partake in activities that advance your emotional and physical well-being.

Building resilience is crucial, but it’s also critical to understand the idea of “resilience fatigue.” This happens when someone relies too much on their resilience to get through challenging circumstances. Although our capacity for resilience can help us deal with stress and adversity, relying too heavily on it can have detrimental effects such as burnout and stress.

Resilience fatigue can be particularly challenging for members of marginalized groups like the BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) community, who may encounter unique and systemic difficulties in their lives. Constantly overcoming obstacles can be exhausting and leave one feeling discouraged and hopeless.

Because of this, it’s critical to realize that while resilience is a useful skill, it shouldn’t be relied upon exclusively to deal with adversity. Other tactics, like establishing boundaries, saying no when necessary, and taking care of oneself, can help to lessen the strain on a person’s resilience. People can maintain their well-being, continue to grow, and thrive by finding balance and not relying solely on one skill.

How Overusing Resilience Impacts the BIPOC Community

It’s important to reiterate that while resilience is necessary for overcoming obstacles in life, using it excessively can be harmful to our health. People of color (BIPOC) in particular face unique challenges and structural barriers that can be harmful to their mental and physical health.

Systemic and institutionalized barriers that BIPOC people must overcome can make it challenging for them to take advantage of opportunities and resources that are easily accessible to others. This can include racial and discriminatory experiences as well as differences in access to healthcare, employment, and education. These difficulties may cause people to experience stress and adversity more frequently and intensely, which can put a heavy strain on their capacity for resilience and coping.

For BIPOC people, the negative effects of overusing resilience can be particularly severe. It’s simple to rely too heavily on resilience as a coping strategy when dealing with systemic obstacles and stressors. Burnout, exhaustion, and other negative effects may result, which may make already existing health disparities worse. Additionally, the constant need to be resilient can discourage people from looking for the resources and support they might require to maintain their well-being.

It is critical to remember that everyone, regardless of background or identity, can benefit from learning resilience. We can improve our confidence, adaptability, and capacity to deal with any situation by developing our resilience. However, it’s also critical to acknowledge the particular difficulties that BIPOC people might encounter and to make sure that they have access to the tools and assistance they require to keep themselves in good health.

Resilience is a valuable trait that can aid us in overcoming life’s obstacles. However, it’s also critical to understand the drawbacks that excessive reliance on resilience can have, particularly for people of color (BIPOC). We can work to maintain our resilience while also working to maintain our general well-being by engaging in self-care practices and asking for help when we need it.

Practical Strategies for Creating Balance

To prevent overusing resilience and preserve general wellbeing, balance is essential. We can avoid burnout and fatigue by striking a balance between the responsibilities of daily life and self-care and personal needs. Here are some doable tactics that can assist in striking a balance and preserving well-being:

  • Learning To Say No: It can be challenging to say “no,” but it’s crucial to put your own needs and objectives first. Rejecting requests that you can’t fulfill or that don’t go along with your values is acceptable. Practice being respectful and polite when you say “no.” It is critical to set healthy boundaries in order to avoid feeling overburdened or overworked.
  • Establishing Boundaries: Overworking and stress can be avoided by establishing clear boundaries for yourself and communicating them to others. Make sure you set aside specific times for work, rest, and leisure. Maintain those restrictions and abstain from going beyond them.
  • Being Assertive: Being assertive entails clearly and confidently expressing your needs and boundaries. Avoid being aggressive or passive when expressing your worries and emotions by using “I” statements instead. You can promote your needs and develop a more balanced lifestyle by being assertive.
  • Being Honest: Being honest and up front with yourself can prevent you from taking on more than you can handle. Be sincere about your needs and limitations with both yourself and other people. As a result, an atmosphere of respect and understanding can be fostered, helping to prevent burnout and fatigue.
  • Self-Care Techniques: You may feel more balanced and energized by taking part in activities that support your physical and emotional well-being. Exercise, mindfulness, and getting enough sleep are crucial self-care routines that can support well-being.

Try scheduling time for self-care activities, creating attainable goals, and getting practice declining requests that don’t fit with your values or goals to put these strategies into practice.

Although it may be difficult, work to maintain your wellness and prevent overusing resilience by aiming to keep things in balance. Utilizing these practical techniques will help you maintain your equilibrium and take care of your overall well-being.

Lesser-Known Tips for Creating Balance

There are some lesser-known tips for finding balance that can help you avoid overusing your resilience and maintain your well-being in addition to the useful strategies we covered in the previous section. Here are just a few:

  1. Set Small Goals: Setting smaller goals can help you divide larger goals into more manageable steps, even though it’s important to have big goals that motivate you. This can prevent you from becoming overburdened and stressed, and it can help you advance toward your objectives without getting worn out.
  2. Take Breaks: It’s crucial to take breaks from work or other obligations so that you can rest and reenergize. This can give you the energy and renewed perspective you need when you return to your work. You could take a brief stroll, practice deep breathing techniques, or just close your eyes and inhale deeply.
  3. Seek Social Support: When it comes to maintaining your well-being, having a supportive network of friends and family can be a great asset. You may feel less alone and more supported if you confide in someone about your stressors and challenges. However, if you are someone who finds it challenging to connect with others, please check out our piece on loneliness here
  4. Practice Gratitude: You can keep a more upbeat and hopeful outlook on life by concentrating on the positive aspects of your life. Try listing three things each day for which you are grateful, or just stop and think about all the wonderful things in your life.
  5. Engage In Creative Pursuits: Painting, writing, or playing music are just a few examples of creative endeavors that can help to lower stress and improve wellbeing. You can use these activities to express yourself, unwind, and interact with something you like.
It might be difficult for you to get to this point, but if you start working toward it, you can really contribute to establishing a sense of balance in your life that will support your pursuit for wellness. By incorporating these lesser-known strategies and making self-care a priority, which are essential if you want to continue facing challenges and overcoming them, you can gradually avoid overusing your resilience.

Conclusion

In this article, we’ve talked about the idea of resilience and how, if overused, it can lead to burnout and other negative effects in addition to being a useful skill for dealing with stress and adversity. We also discussed how BIPOC people and other marginalized communities can suffer when resilience is overused.

However, there are useful tactics that people can use to maintain their wellbeing and find balance. The ability to say “no,” creating clear boundaries, being honest and assertive, and taking care of oneself are all crucial strategies for finding balance in life. We can avoid burnout and maintain our resilience over time by prioritizing and incorporating these techniques into our daily lives.

We also shared some lesser-known strategies for achieving balance, like cultivating a growth mindset, practicing gratitude, enlisting the aid of others, and partaking in creative endeavors. These suggestions can help us develop our resilience and give us more tools for dealing with stress and adversity.

It’s critical to keep in mind that everyone can benefit from resilience, which is a skill that can be developed over time. By focusing on balance and incorporating helpful strategies for us, we can build resilience and better manage the stress and adversity that we may encounter.

Always keep in mind that life will present us with difficulties that we must overcome. This is why prioritizing your needs and taking care of yourself is crucial. By doing so, you will be better able to face life’s challenges with poise, a renewed sense of harmony, and resilience.

Introduction to Stress

Stress is a normal part of everyday life. Everyone experiences it, whether it’s from a big exam or a sports event. Even major life events like moving or losing a loved one can cause stress.

But what exactly is stress? When faced with a challenge or demand, your body produces stress as a typical physical and mental reaction. It’s a response to anything that throws you off balance or threatens you.

The hormones cortisol and adrenaline are released by your body when you’re under stress, providing you with added strength, power, and bravery to deal with the stressful situation. This is called the “fight or flight” response, which has been a survival strategy for humans for thousands of years.

Although some stress can be beneficial, too much can have negative effects. It is essential to comprehend stress, its impact on you, and how to manage it. So, let’s dive into the realm of chronic stress and how it impacts us!

Acute vs Chronic Stress

There are two main categories of stress: acute stress and chronic stress. Acute stress is temporary stress that develops as a result of a particular circumstance. A test or a speech in front of a large audience, for instance, can be extremely stressful. Once the situation is resolved, this kind of stress typically ends.

Contrarily, chronic stress is persistent stress that lasts for a longer period of time. This kind of stress is brought on by ongoing issues like a challenging job, money problems, or relationship problems. Your mental and physical health may suffer from chronic stress, which can also cause you to feel anxious, depressed, and overloaded.

Understanding the distinction between acute and chronic stress is crucial if you want to learn how to control your stress levels. It might be time to talk to someone about how you’re feeling and what you can do to manage your stress levels if you’ve been feeling stressed for a while.

So keep in mind that while stress can be beneficial in moderation, excessive amounts can have a negative impact on your health and well-being. To maintain your happiness, health, and lack of stress, be aware of your stress levels and take action to manage them.

Weathering: The Harmful Impact of Chronic Stress on People of Color

Again, the stress of everyday life is common. It can improve our performance under pressure, but over time, it may have negative effects on our mental and physical health.

Long-term stress that lasts for weeks, months, or even years is referred to as chronic stress and is particularly harmful. Numerous health issues, such as heart disease, obesity, and depression, may result from it.

Chronic stress, however, can have even more harmful effects on health for people of color. Weathering is the term used to describe the process by which long-term stressors, such as discrimination and poverty, can speed up aging and impair health.

In the 1990s, public health researcher Arline Geronimus first used the term “weathering.” She noticed that, even after adjusting for variables like income and education, Black women still had higher rates of preterm birth than White women. Geronimus proposed that the cause was long-term stress brought on by poverty and discrimination, which over time was “weathering” the bodies of Black women.

Research since then has established that weathering is a real phenomenon. According to studies, Black people in particular experience higher levels of stress than White people do. This stress has been linked to a variety of unhealthy outcomes, from high blood pressure to diabetes.

Because it gradually breaks down the body, much like how waves destroy a rock, weathering is extremely dangerous. The hormone cortisol, which aids in our response to the stressor, is produced by the body when we are under stress. However, prolonged high cortisol levels can harm our cells and cause inflammation, which is connected to a variety of health issues. Chronic stress can also result in unhealthy coping strategies like binge eating, smoking, or drinking. These actions can stress us out even more while also endangering our health.

It’s crucial to understand that individual stressors like losing a job or going through a breakup don’t always lead to weathering. It is brought on by long-lasting, systemic stressors rooted in social and economic inequality, such as poverty and discrimination. Furthermore, because these stressors are so ingrained in our culture, it may be challenging to get away from them.

According to a 2019 study that was published in the Journal of Health and Social Behavior, Black Americans age biologically more quickly than White Americans. Telomere length, a marker of cellular aging, was examined in the study, and it was discovered that Black people had shorter telomeres than white people did. This study suggests that the stressors of racism and discrimination may contribute to weathering in people of color.

Another 2015 study found that weathering may help to explain some of the racial differences in maternal and infant mortality rates. This study was published in the American Journal of Public Health. According to the study, weathering may be a factor in the maternal mortality rate disparity that exists between Black and White women in the United States, which is three to four times greater for Black women. This study also indicates, persistent stress from racism and discrimination may raise the risk of pregnancy complications and preterm birth, which would raise mortality rates for Black mothers and children.

The seriousness of weathering for people of color is highlighted by these studies, which also show how it increases the risk of pregnancy complications, mortality, and biological aging. To lessen the chronic stress that people of color experience, it is crucial to address the systemic causes of racism and discrimination.

There is no doubt that weathering is a significant problem for people of color, and resolving it calls for both individual and systemic solutions. We can work toward a more equitable and healthful society for all by taking steps to lessen chronic stress and addressing the causes of racism and discrimination.

Practical Solutions to Cope with Weathering

So what can we do to deal with weathering now that we are aware of what it is and how it can affect our health?

We can take measures to manage the effects of stress on our physical and mental health even though we often cannot control the stressors that lead to weathering. Here are a few examples:

  1. Prioritize self-care: Self-care is crucial for stress management and enhancing general well-being. This can involve practices like getting proper rest, complying to a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and taking breaks to unwind and refuel.
  2. Seek support: Don’t be hesitant to seek out support from friends, family, or mental health professionals. Your mental health can be improved and stress can be decreased by talking to someone about your feelings and your experiences.
  3. Engage in relaxation techniques: Deep breathing exercises, meditation, yoga, and massages can all help you unwind and reduce stress.
  4. Create boundaries: Now, this is a big one within communities of color, but in both your personal and professional life, setting boundaries can help you cope with stress and avoid burnout. Saying “no” to additional responsibilities when you need a break or if possible taking time off of work when you’re feeling overburdened are two examples of how to do this.
  5. Get involved in community activism: It can also help to improve health outcomes to address the societal problems that lead to weathering. Participating in community activism, such as pushing for just laws or giving your time to a nearby nonprofit, can contribute to positive change.

Keep in mind that dealing with weathering is a lifelong process, and different people will respond to different things in different ways. It’s critical to try out various coping mechanisms to determine which suits you the best.

You can take steps to manage the effects of weathering on your health and well-being by prioritizing self-care, seeking support, practicing relaxation techniques, setting boundaries, and becoming active in your community.

The Lonely Side of Life: A Search for Community

Have you ever had the impression that everyone else is off living their lives while you’re just watching from the sidelines? For many adults in their 30s and well beyond, the feeling of being distant and alone, even when surrounded by others is a reality. But let’s be honest: being single can be great. It is a gift to have the ability to live your life as you see fit. Yet, everyone needs a little human connection every now and then, no matter how much we may cherish our freedom.

When we least anticipate it, loneliness enters our lives like a thief in the night waiting to steal our joy. It’s like someone from the past who shows up unannounced and is just waiting to bring us down. Like that person from our past, loneliness can be challenging to overcome. Did you know there are many people in this same community? I know it might be hard to realize it, but there is a large group of people who share your feeling of isolation and lack of connection. So— take a seat, pour yourself a cup of coffee or tea, and prepare to embark on a journey with us to overcome loneliness and establish connection.

Understanding the Roots of Loneliness

We can be struck by loneliness like a rogue wave at any time. But what is it about ourselves that makes us feel so cut off and distant? Let’s examine a few of the typical offenders responsible for the blues of loneliness.

The first issue is social isolation. The more alone we feel, the less connected we are to others. It’s a terrible cycle. And the less we want to reach out and connect, the more alone we feel. The good news is that stopping this loop can be done with as little effort as a phone call or text.

The absence of a romantic partnership or relationship comes next. It’s simple to believe that everyone around us is in a relationship, making us feel like the odd one out. But keep in mind that love comes in a variety of forms; being in a relationship isn’t the only way to experience it.

Not to mention, there is also the social pressure to be in a relationship. It can be difficult when we believe that those closest to us—particularly our families—want desperately for us to be in a committed relationship. And although it may be difficult, it’s crucial that we resist letting those people affect us.

The career-focused lifestyle is the last one. Many of us are working incredibly hard to advance while hustle-and-bustling. However, it’s simple to forget to make time for the important things, like personal connection, in the midst of all the hustle.

So there you have it: these are the typical reasons why people feel lonely. But don’t worry, we won’t abandon you. In the part that follows, we’ll go over strategies for overcoming loneliness.

How Loneliness Affects Us and What We Can Do About It

Loneliness is like a shadow that follows us about and hovers in the background. But it has actual impacts on our life; it is more than simply a feeling. Let’s examine some of the effects that loneliness can have on us.

First, our levels of stress and worry have grown. Worries tend to accumulate quickly when we feel cut off. But don’t worry, we’ll talk about solutions for reducing stress later on.

The detrimental effect on mental health is next. It is more difficult to reach out and form relationships with people when one is depressed or anxious due to loneliness. But with the correct assistance and resources, we can make things better.

Third, our feeling of purpose and personal pleasure have both declined. It might be challenging to experience happiness and fulfillment in life when we’re feeling lonely. The good news is that we may boost our sense of purpose and wellbeing by taking a few easy measures.

The issues with our physical health are last but certainly not least. Loneliness has been linked to weakened immune systems and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, according to studies. But don’t worry; later on we’ll discuss how to enhance our physical health.

How to Beat Loneliness

We may feel like we are alone in the world when we are feeling lonely. It’s very easy to feel like you are stuck and having to withstand the storm. Let’s examine some strategies for combating loneliness.

The power of connection comes first. Making meaningful connections with others is essential to battling loneliness, whether it is through reconnecting with old friends, joining a new social organization, or volunteering.

The significance of self-care is the next. Maintaining our physical and emotional wellbeing depends on taking care of ourselves. Self-care, whether it be through physical activity, meditation, or simply spending some time for oneself, is a potent weapon in the struggle against loneliness.

The function of therapy comes in third. We can better our mental health and our emotional well-being by talking to a trained specialist. Therapy is an important tool in the fight against loneliness, whether it be through individual, group, or couples counseling.

We also have the strength of purpose, which is absolutely crucial. Whether it be through employment, interests, or volunteer work, having a feeling of purpose in life can make us feel happier and less isolated. Therefore, don’t be afraid to explore new things and discover your passion!

It’s important to remember that this is not a personal failure, it’s a common experience that many people go through. It’s okay to take the time you need to adjust to this change and be kind to yourself during this process.

In this post, we’ll go over 7 tips that can help you cope with the stress of job loss and find your way to a new opportunity. From seeking emotional support to staying informed and connected, these tips will help you navigate this difficult time and find a new job that’s even better than the last. Remember that there are resources available to help you through this, and it’s important to take advantage of them. It’s okay to reach out for help, it’s okay to take time to process your emotions and it’s okay to be a little uncertain. We understand this is a difficult time, but with the right mindset and resources, you can come out of this even stronger and find a job that aligns with your passion and goals.

Many of us have a hard time staying focused and staying positive during uncertain times, but its important to give yourself space to process and then dive into some of these additional steps, starting with:

  1. Seek emotional support: One of the most important things you can do when dealing with job loss is to talk to someone about your feelings. Whether it’s a friend, family member, or therapist, talking to someone who can listen and offer support can help you process your emotions and cope with the stress. Joining a support group or online community can also be a great way to connect with others who are going through the same thing.
  2. Stay active: Exercise and physical activity are great ways to release endorphins, which can improve your mood and reduce stress. Even if you’re feeling down, make sure to get up and move around for at least 30 minutes a day. Whether it’s going for a walk, doing yoga, or hitting the gym, staying active can help you stay positive and focused.
  3. Take care of yourself: This one is super important! Eating a healthy diet, getting enough sleep, and practicing relaxation techniques such as yoga or meditation can help reduce stress levels. It’s also important to make time for activities that you enjoy, whether it’s reading, watching your favorite shows, or listening to music. Taking care of yourself physically and emotionally can help you stay strong and focused as you search for a new job.
  4. Stay informed and connected: Keeping abreast of the latest job market trends and networking with other professionals in your field can help you stay informed and connected, which can provide a sense of control and hope. Sign up for job alerts, attend networking events, and keep your LinkedIn profile up to date.
  5. Make a plan: Make a plan to manage your finances and create a budget. Look for ways to reduce expenses and increase income, if possible. It’s important to be proactive about your finances and not let stress and worry about money control you.
  6. Look into available resources: Many states have unemployment benefits and other resources that can help people who have lost their jobs. Look into what resources are available to you and apply for them if you are eligible. You can also look into other forms of assistance such as food banks or housing assistance.
  7. Consider retraining or up-skilling: If your job has been impacted by automation or other technological advancements, consider looking into retraining or up-skilling programs that can help you acquire new skills that are in demand. This is a great way to increase your chances of finding a new job and staying competitive in the job market.

It’s vital to keep in mind that losing a job is not a sign of personal failure despite the fact that it might be a difficult and emotional event. This transition may cause emotions of uneasiness, tension, and apprehension, but with the appropriate attitude, resources, and support, you can get through this trying time and emerge even stronger.

It’s worth mentioning this again, but during this transition, it’s critical to practice self-kindness. Give yourself time to acclimate and think about the change. While it’s acceptable to experience feelings of stress, sadness, or annoyance, it’s also important to prioritize relaxation, self-care, and finding joy in the little things. Keep your sphere of influence positive and uplifting, and don’t be hesitant to ask for assistance if you need it.

There is light at the end of the tunnel; with the correct tools, you may locate a new opportunity that fits with your objectives, principles, and interests. To develop your talents, widen your network, and establish connections with prospective employers, use job search engines, job boards, professional networking organizations, and career counseling. It’s important to keep in mind that while the search for a new career may not be simple, with perseverance, drive, and the correct tools, you can find a road that leads to success and pleasure.

The start of a new year often brings with it a renewed sense of motivation and a desire to make positive changes in our lives. However, for many of us, this motivation can quickly fizzle out as we struggle to meet our New Year’s resolutions and goals. The “New Year, New Me” mentality can lead us to set unrealistic expectations for ourselves and set ourselves up for disappointment and failure.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. By setting realistic and achievable goals and breaking them down into smaller, manageable steps, we can make progress and improve our chances of success.

One of the most important things to keep in mind when setting goals is to make sure they are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART). This means that your goals should be specific enough so you know exactly what you want to achieve, measurable so you can track your progress, achievable so you don’t set yourself up for failure, relevant to your values and time-bound so you have a deadline to work towards.

For example, instead of setting a vague goal like “lose weight,” set a specific goal like “lose 10 pounds in 3 months by exercising for 30 minutes, 5 days a week and following a healthy diet.” This goal is specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound.

Another important step in achieving your goals is to break them down into smaller, manageable steps. This will make it less overwhelming and more achievable. For example, if your goal is to run a marathon, you can break it down into smaller steps like:

  • Starting with a brisk walk for 30 minutes, 3 times a week
  • Gradually increasing your running time and distance over time
  • Incorporating strength and flexibility training
  • Finding a training plan or joining a running group for accountability and support

It’s also important to keep in mind that progress, not perfection, is what’s important. Be kind and compassionate with yourself, and celebrate small wins along the way. For example, if you’ve been working towards running a marathon, don’t get discouraged if you miss a training day or don’t meet your time goals. Instead, focus on your progress and celebrate the small wins, like running for longer distances or feeling stronger and more energized.

Reflecting on what you want to achieve, why you want to achieve it, and how it will make you feel once you’ve reached it can also help you stay focused and motivated. When you understand the why behind your goals, it will be easier to stay motivated and push through the tough times.

Another key aspect of achieving your goals is to remember that change is a process, not an event. It takes time and effort to make lasting changes and it’s important to be patient with yourself and not give up if you encounter setbacks. Life happens, and plans change. Be flexible and adjust your goals and plan accordingly. Don’t beat yourself up if you miss a deadline or slip up, instead focus on getting back on track.

Lastly, don’t focus on the idea of becoming a completely new person, focus on becoming the best version of yourself. Embrace your strengths, work on your weaknesses, and focus on self-improvement. When you focus on self-improvement, you’ll find that you’re more satisfied with yourself and your life.

It’s important to remember that achieving your goals is not a one-time event, it’s a journey. And like any journey, it will have its ups and downs. But with the right mindset and approach, you can make progress and achieve your goals.

So, if you’re struggling to meet your New Year’s resolutions and goals, don’t give up. Just remember, by setting SMART goals, tracking your progress, and practicing self-compassion and self-motivation, you can make meaningful and lasting changes in your life. Remember, progress is not always linear, and setbacks are a normal part of the process. Don’t be too hard on yourself if you slip up, and don’t give up on your goals. Keep pushing forward and stay committed to your resolutions. It may take time, but with perseverance and determination, you can achieve your goals and make this year one of positive change.

Many of us pray and ask the universe to unfold for us. We want that car. We want that house. We want that perfect relationship. We say it with our words and soon life begins to work for us. Yet many times we can’t see the forest through the trees. We expect things to be easy. We want things to be easy — and in my experience it’s often not that way. I’ve been told “no” more times than I can count. I’ve been let down, disappointed, and let down some more. Yet I sometimes ask myself is this really what’s happening in my life.

Life has a way of supporting us in our story and in our journey. It’s very difficult to be able to see that at times, but this is why it’s important to reframe your thoughts to help create positive changes in your life. Here are five steps to creating a healthier outlook on your life circumstances:

1. REFLECT

I’ve often found that once I begin to reflect on my current circumstances, I think back in my life and reflect on the things I’ve asked the universe for. Once this happens I’m able to see things differently. When disappointment hits, it feels like life is working against us, but more times than not I begin to see that life is working in my favor. The earlier we can begin to ask ourselves hard questions and see how the mirror we call life is reflecting our truth back at us, the sooner we can begin to grow from our truth.

2. CONFESS

This is a pivotal step and it may sound difficult, but I’m not talking about confessing to someone behind a wall or even your therapist. I’m talking about confessing to yourself. We will build walls and twist painful truths, but until we realize our own faults and our own shortcomings, we’ll never grow into who it is we’re supposed to become. I always say this, if you can’t be honest with yourself, who exactly can you be honest with?

As there is power in the tongue, there is also power in the pen. Something that really helped me unpack a lot of things swirling around in the confines of my own mind, was journaling. Ask yourself hard questions. Ask yourself WHY you felt that way? Ask yourself WHY again, and again, and again, and one last time. Slowly you’ll begin to see some things emerge that you didn’t realize before.

*One thing I’ve learned that was really important in this process, was to ask myself IN ALL THINGS, WHAT IS THIS ABOUT ME?

I find this to be extremely important in helping you come to terms with the areas in your blindspots that need to be addressed to step into your full potential. It’s much easier to blame an external source (ie: someone or something), and doing this doesn’t allow us to be accountable to ourselves in our own story. So while in this step of being honest with yourself, be fully honest!

If things get really tough, remember to breathe! There is magic in our breath which helps to calm our nervous system!

3. REFRAME

Now that you’ve had some time to own your narrative and make it work for you, it’s time to reframe the story. When we become armed with facts and knowing that the universe is working in our favor, we can begin to make those adjustments that have prevented us from moving forward in healthy ways, because ultimately until we begin to choose ourselves first, we’ll continue to have the same story revisit us over and over, just wrapped up in a different circumstance. So seeing the truth behind it all will begin to unlock your full potential.

4. ACCEPTANCE

Things happen in our lives and that’s just inevitable, but far too often we focus our energy on our hurt and disappointments. I’ve learned that it’s important to accept the fact that somethings just don’t happen the way we expect them to. Over the years I’ve learned to become in tune with my emotions and feelings. By doing this I can accept the fact that I’m a human being first, and that disappointment is something that happens to us all. I’ve come up with a rule for myself.

That rule is to give myself a day or so to acknowledge the disappointment that may have entered into my life. In that space and time, I’m mindful however to not live in the hurt. It’s very easy to become trapped in a world where we are the victim, when we can surely become our own savior.

5. GRATITUDE

This is the step that helps it all come together and prepares you for whatever life gets ready to throw at you next. I’ve often found that when I spend some time to reflect and reframe the things that are happening or have happened in my life, the more I’m grateful to understand that it wasn’t “bad luck” or anything like that. It was simply life showing up to help me become who it is I say that I want to be. In this space of gratitude show yourself grace and mercy. Show yourself love for your past mistakes and give thanks for the opportunity to learn and become a better version of yourself.

In 2008 I read “A New Earth” By Ekchart Tolle. This book helped to change my life. Whenever things get tough, I always think back to this quote:

“Life will give you whatever experience is most helpful for the evolution of your consciousness. How do you know this is the experience you need? Because this is the experience you are having at the moment.”

So although it may be very difficult for one reason or another, just know that it’s ok to love you more. It’s ok to acknowledge your past and to face your present. Doing these things with honesty and conviction for YOURSELF, will allow you to truly live the life you were destined to live. All you have to do is think back to who it is you said you want to become, and buckle up when life shows up to support you in your truth.

You’ve got this!
